Skills list 2010

With globalization and the increasing shortages in the workforce, the labour market is in constant evolution. What are the most sought-after skills in 2010?

The labour market’s actual context is strongly influenced by globalization. Everything is changing, and changing fast. In addition to the shortages in the workforce, a new generation in search of balance in the work place is emerging. We’re far from the time when people completed their education, found a job in a company and entrusted it with their entire evolution.

These days, people have many different careers during their life. That’s why developing skills is a mutual responsibility between the company and you. But what are the skills to develop and improve on? To give you the relevant information to today’s reality, Adecco surveyed a dozen of its human resources advisers, experts in the recruitment business.

The know-how

The know-how refers to the training and academic skills. Of course, you must have the basic skills to perform your duties and responsibilities. But in the recruitment process, it seems that know-how isn’t as important as it used to be. Because of the all the shortages in the workforce, employers are now looking at the candidate’s potential to progress in the company.

Nevertheless, there are some essential skills that are recognized and sought-after by employers:

  • Ability to adapt to new technologies
  • Bilingualism
  • Quality of the written language

In the eyes of an employer, you have added value if you demonstrate an ability to adapt to technological tools and Web 2.0. At the very least, you must demonstrate a desire to tame the new developments in technology. The Adecco recruitment team also noticed that globalization leads to an increased demand for bilingualism, even in region. If you’re comfortable with a second language, you definitely have a head start.

Are you looking for an administrative position? Know that the quality of your written communication weighs heavily in the balance. Knowing how to write properly is essential given the increasing use of Internet and email.

However, according to Adecco’s human resources advisors, that’s exactly what’s lacking in candidates. It’s apparently very hard to find people that master the written language.

Interpersonal skills

Companies are increasingly focusing on the interpersonal skills of the candidate, that is to say, his personal qualities and values. It is important to ensure consistency between the values of the individual and those of the organization.You should always look for companies that have similar values to your own.

In terms of personal qualities, it’s important to know that employers look for people who can demonstrate:

  • Team spirit and and versatility given the trend towards multi-disciplinary environments;
  • Openness to change because the world is in perpetual motion. So, do not resist change or see it as being negative;
  • Entrepreneurship or a mind for customer service given the growing number of SMEs. Moreover, it is increasingly common for positions to require that you meet the needs of customers externally or within the organization. Hence the importance of having a mind for customer service.
Leadership potential

With the imminent retirement of baby boomers, managing positions and other key roles are expected to multiply. The new curricula has not surprisingly adapted to this new reality. It may thus be wise to develop your leadership skills because it is a new professional avenue opening to you. Dare to explore!
