First aid
Have a first aid kit ready with all the essentials and explain their use to your child. Your first aid kit should have:
- A box of different sized Band-Aids for small cuts;
- Sterile gauze for larger cuts, bandages and scissors;
- Tweezers to remove splinters;
- Hydrogen peroxide and cotton swabs to clean cuts;
- Digital thermometer;
- Cold compress in the freezer.
Protection
- Make sure all the doors and windows have safety locks.
- Place all the matches, lighters, prescription medication, cleaning products and other toxic substances away in a safe place. Make sure all products are identified and in their original bottle.
- Keep all the liquor locked away and make sure it doesn’t magically disappear.
- Keep guns and munitions locked away.
- Set your lights on a timer so your child doesn’t come home to a dark house.
Fire safety
- Place fire detectors on each floor of the house (or for full-floor homes, place one in the kitchen and one near all the bedrooms). Test them regularly.
- Change all old or ruined wires and don’t plug more than two things into the same electric outlet.
- Set the water heater so it doesn’t go over 54° Celsius to reduce the risks of being scalded.
Power failure
- Always have flashlights nearby.
- Have a couple of objects that work on batteries, for example: radio, clock, electronic games, etc…
