Each trimester presents its own unique challenges for partners who continue having sex during pregnancy, so you may find yourself looking for a new favourite position to ensure comfortable and pleasurable sex for both parties.
Coming out on top
During the first trimester, the baby belly hasn’t quite popped out yet, but breasts can become particularly sensitive and, oftentimes, painful. The missionary position (man on top) definitely isn't the most ideal position all the way through pregnancy, but there is an exception: if the man can avoid putting his weight on his partner, the missionary position can be quite comfortable. Many women, however, are not comfortable lying on their back any later than the second trimester. Pressure on internal organs, understandably, makes intercourse a rather uncomfortable experience. The positions you choose during your first trimester will probably end up being your favourites during your entire pregnancy, but you'll likely make some adjustments as the weeks go by.
Cowgirl...
The cowgirl position (man lies on his back with the woman on top) is a popular one because it allows the woman control of the rhythm, movement and depth of penetration. She will feel in control during sex and if things become unpleasant or painful, simply adjust or put an end to penetration. If her breasts are sensitive, the man will have to refrain from touching them; however, the woman might enjoy holding her breasts during the back and forth movement, as she'll be able to better gauge what feels comfortable and what doesn't.
...And reverse cowgirl
The reverse cowgirl (woman on top with her back to her partner) allows the woman to rest on her partner's thighs. Stability and balance are not yet affected in the early stages of pregnancy, so the woman can stimulate her clitoris during penetration.
Doggy style
Doggy style (penetrating from behind) can be exciting, as long as the woman is capable of resting comfortably on her forearms. After a while, though, you'll need to start bringing pillows and cushions to the party. Not only will they work for her arms, but they'll also allow her to rest her head as well.
Spooning
Spooning (both partners lying on their sides with the woman’s back resting on the man’s torso) is a much calmer position—one that doesn't allow for deep penetration and reduces back-and-forth movement. Still, if you want to up the pace, place your bodies in a 90-degree angle (if the woman’s belly allows it). When her belly is bigger, she can raise one knee (the one not touching the bed) to let the penis penetrate easier and the man simply changes the angle of his body.
The chair position
The chair position is an interesting option, as long as the woman is able to rest on a table or desk. It allows couples later in pregnancy to enjoy the joys of penetration without getting exhausted. The man sits on a chair (not too high, not too low and, most importantly, stable) while the woman straddles him, turning her back to him and resting on a counter, desk or table in front of her. In this position, penetration is deep, but the woman can adjust herself depending on her comfort level.
The best of the rest
Oral sex, anal sex or masturbating with your partner can also be done depending on each couple’s interests and desires. The woman's comfort always comes first and foremost when having sex during pregnancy, so throw the Kama Sutra out the window in a fit of passion and go with what works.
