Intimidation
Sometimes, children just go overboard. They gang up, tease, hit, harass and ridicule a poor child that does not deserve any of that because no one deserves it. Yes, something triggered the whole thing, a quarrel that degenerated, a little love story or jealousy but nothing justifies such rejection and torture.
If your son is being hit at school or if your daughter is being harassed, you should definitely do something about it. Similarly, if you know that your son or daughter is part of a group that is being harsh on a child, it is your duty to take action with your child before the situation worsens. Contact the direction of your school and talk with your child. If he suggests a solution, try your best to use his idea because he is in the best position to know what will work.
