Quebec Parental Insurance Plan

Adoption

Basic Rates: 37 weeks of benefits: the first 12 weeks at 70% and the following 25 weeks at 55%.

Particular Rates: 28 weeks of benefits at 75%.

The total amount of adoption benefit weeks may be taken by one parent or the other, or split between both, according to an established arrangement between both individuals. Furthermore, these weeks may be taken concurrently by the parents.

In the case of an adoption in Quebec, the earliest the adoption benefits may start is during the week of the arrival of the child or children with one of the adopting parent. In the case of an adoption outside of Quebec, the earliest the benefits can start is two weeks before the arrival of the child with one of the adopting parent.

Waiting period

There is no waiting period before the beginning of the benefits.

  • The benefits are taxable.
  • The Quebec Parental Insurance Plan offers an additional benefit to families with lower incomes.
