Love nicknames

They call each other mom and dad!!! Not so long ago, calling your partner mom was considered a symptom of sexual issues. Now that we are parents, do we see things the same way? And you? What do you call each other?

The mom and dad “case”

Of all nicknames, the only ones that make some people cringe are mom and dad. For obvious Freudian reasons, mom and dad imply a relation of authority between the lovers.

We asked James Anglehart, father, psychologist and psychology teacher to give us his opinion on the matter. “Before having children, the psychologist in me saw a very regressive side to this phenomenon. The husband becomes the father and, consequently, the woman becomes a child again and vice and versa. However, over the years and as a behaviourist and a father, I now think that repetition is to blame. We often ask to “give this to mom” or “ask daddy” and the times when the partner is called mom or dad increases every day.”

Indeed, to avoid children calling us by our name, we insist on the words “mom” and “dad”. Some couples address their partners in different manners depending on the opinion they are looking for. They say “dad” when they want to hear the father’s point of view, call them by their names when they want a general opinion and use other love nicknames for couple matters.

According to Mr. Anglehart, we should avoid to judge. “We can presume of a lot of things. Is it regression to call your wife mom? Is it the recognition that she is more than the average girl now that she is the mother of our children? Are we projecting the relationship we have with our own mother? Do we find it appealing to be taking care of by her because she takes such good care of our children? Besides, we rarely see this habit persist as the children grow.”

Love and humor

A couple that laughs is a healthy couple and nicknames usually become a nice little touch in the midst of our busy days, a way to naturally express our complicity.

Indeed, nicknames often stem from a joke or from tender moments and whether they are affectionate or funny, they make our proximity more tangible, make us smile and make it easier to ask for a favour without looking like we are giving orders. Nicknames are a symbol of intimacy and affection.

Ear infections, antibiotics, and prevention

Becoming a parent also means being acquainted with several small infections encountered during our own childhood. Ear infections are numerous and can leave you having lots of questions. We try to respond to the most frequent ones.

My child is often absentminded!

Do you find yourself often repeating phrases like "Hello? Is anyone there?" ? If so, it seems that your child is often absentminded. Here's how to help your distracted children stay concentrated.

A teenager’s bedroom

Your teenager's bedroom is a disaster. You even invented new words to describe this horrendous place where food and clothes seem to blend into a new kind of carpet but your child doesn't seem to mind. What can you do?

My child is smelly!

Your child is now 6 years old. The innocence of childhood still shines brightly in his or her eyes but… they're smelly! When your child gets hot, you scrunch your nose and smell a tinge of sweat. Are they too young for deodorant?
